The RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Offshore theory course is an advanced shore-based course designed to equip sailors with the knowledge and skills needed for coastal and offshore passages. It builds upon the Day Skipper theory and focuses on advanced navigation, meteorology, and other essential skills. This course prepares individuals for the RYA Coastal Skipper practical course and the Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore practical exams.
Key aspects of the course include:
Advanced Navigation:
This includes position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge (including secondary port calculations), navigation in restricted visibility, and the use of Admiralty publications and electronic position finding equipment.
Meteorology:
The course covers taking and interpreting weather forecasts, plotting weather systems, and using a barometer for weather predictions.
Seamanship:
It covers aspects like personal safety, use of safety equipment, fire prevention and fighting, distress signals, and understanding vessel stability.
Collision Regulations:
A thorough understanding of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) is a key component.
Passage Planning:
The course emphasises the skills needed to plan safe passages, both during the day and at night.
Preparation for Practical Exams:
The course content is aligned with the requirements of the RYA Coastal Skipper practical course and the Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore practical exams.
Assessment:
The course culminates in a set of final exam, which assesses the student's understanding of the course material.
Successful completion leads to the award of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Certificate.
